DELOSPERMA (LAVENDER ICE®)

Image of Delosperma 'Psfave' (LAVENDER ICE®)

Blooms of Bressingham

Family

Aizoaceae

Botanical Name

DELOSPERMA 'Psfave'(LAVENDER ICE®)

Plant Common Name

Hybrid Ice Plant, Ice Plant

General Description

The surprisingly hardy iceplant, Lavender Ice®, offers cool looks to garden hot spots in southern and northern gardens alike, though its hardiness depends largely on good winter drainage. (Cold wet ground will cause root rot and death, so it must be relegated to elevated or sloping ground with porous well-drained soil.) This Plant Select® introduction was discovered as a sport of the popular Delosperma Table Mountain® and boasts starry pale lavender flowers with darker halos at the centers.

This mat-forming succulent has soft green linear leaves that look great all season long. Starry flowers cover it from late spring until frost. When in full bloom, it looks like a carpet of color. The flowers are attractive to lots of insect pollinators, especially bees and butterflies.

Sunny locations with excellent soil drainage are ideal for ice plant. This cultivar grows well in high heat if shaded from the the hottest midday sun, but it really thrives where summers are somewhat mild. Allow plants to completely dry out between water applications, and be sure to refrain from watering in winter. Divide ice plant if it becomes too crowded and propagate by cuttings. This is an excellent choice for modern gardeners looking for soft flower color. Plant it in broad shallow containers, stone troughs, rock gardens or pebbly sunny border edges. It is ideal for coastal plantings too.
