Family

Ranunculaceae

Botanical Name

DELPHINIUM 'Aurora Deep Purple'( AURORA SERIES)

Plant Common Name

Aurora Deep Purple Delphinium, Delphinium, Larkspur

General Description

Delphinium ‘Aurora Deep Purple’ bears tall, densely packed spires of royal purple, semi-double flowers which grace the garden from late spring to midsummer. Each individual blossom of this vigorous hybrid is decorated with a small white “bee”, or central tuft of stamens. The vivid blooms arise from basal clumps of deeply lobed, rich green foliage, and are visited by butterflies and hummingbirds.

Plant delphiniums in full sun and moist, fertile, well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. They endure best when grown in areas with cool to moderate summer weather, and falter when exposed to very hot temperatures. The tall flowering stems may require staking to prevent toppling, and windy sites should be avoided. After the flowers fade, promptly cut back the stems to any lower flowering side shoots to encourage extended blooming. A second display of flowers may be produced in mid-autumn. Monitor closely for slugs and snails in spring, as these can damage new growth.

Delphiniums bring dramatic vertical appeal and gorgeous color to the perennial border or cottage garden. Their striking blooms are also highly prized as cut flowers. Often short-lived, these perennials are frequently treated as annuals or biennials, particularly in areas with long, hot summers.
