Family

Ranunculaceae

Botanical Name

DELPHINIUM carolinianum

Plant Common Name

Carolina Larkspur

General Description

Carolina larkspur displays tall, slender stems studded with spurred, five-petaled flowers that range in color from bright blue to white. Native to a large expanse of the central United States, this showy perennial may be seen blooming in meadows and along dry, rocky roadsides from mid-spring to early summer. The flowers rise on downy stems from basal mounds of feathery, deeply divided, gray-green leaves. After blooming, the plants typically go dormant with the arrival of summer heat. The leaves reappear again in early spring as the showy flowers emerge.

Widely adaptable, this sun-loving perennial may be grown in average soils that are moist to dry, and acidic to alkaline in pH. Soggy soils and excessive shade should be avoided. As Carolina larkspur is fleeting in its appearance and visual weight, it is prettiest when combined with grasses and other wildflowers in a meadow setting or among summer and fall bloomers in a naturalistic garden. It lovely blossoms may attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, and also make good cut flowers.
