General Description
Delphinium ‘Cherry Blossom’ bears dense spires of semi-double, pastel pink flowers from late spring through early summer. Its blossoms are decorated with small white “bees”, or central tufts of stamens. They rise on sturdy stems from vigorous mounds of deeply-lobed, rich green foliage, and may be visited by butterflies and hummingbirds.
Delphiniums prefer full sun and moist, fertile, well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. Thriving in areas with cool to moderate summer weather, they falter when exposed to very hot temperatures. Taller varieties may require staking to avoid toppling, and windy sites should be avoided. After the flowers fade, promptly cut back the stems to encourage a potential second show of flowers in autumn. Monitor closely for slugs and snails in spring, as these can damage new growth.
The beautiful colors and striking vertical habit of delphiniums add drama to mixed beds and borders. Their gorgeous blooms also make outstanding cut flowers. Often short-lived, these perennials are frequently treated as annuals or biennials, particularly in areas with long, hot summers.
