Botanical Name

DELPHINIUM( Connecticut Yankee Mix)

Plant Common Name

Connecticut Yankee Delphinium, Delphinium, Larkspur

General Description

Connecticut Yankee Mix delphiniums are compact-growing hybrids which bloom in shades of white, lavender, blue or purple. Easier to grow than many other varieties, they are a perfect choice for first-time delphinium growers. Their airy spires of single, spurred flowers appear from early to midsummer, and seldom require staking as do taller varieties. They rise atop vigorous mounds of deeply lobed, rich green foliage, and are attractive to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.

Delphiniums prefer full sun and moist, fertile, well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. Thriving in areas with cool to moderate summer weather, they falter when exposed to very hot temperatures. Taller varieties often require staking, and windy sites should be avoided. After the flowers fade, promptly cut back the stems to encourage extended blooming. Monitor closely for slugs and snails in spring, as these can damage new growth.

The beautiful colors and striking vertical habit of delphiniums add drama to mixed beds and borders. Their gorgeous blooms also make outstanding cut flowers. Often short-lived, these perennials are frequently treated as annuals or biennials, particularly in areas with long, hot summers.
