DELPHINIUM 'Delft Blue'( Belladonna Group)
Belladonna Delphinium, Delft Blue Delphinium
The unique, two-toned flowers of delphinium ‘Delft Blue’call to mind the renowned Dutch pottery for which it is named. The petals of its single, spurred, pale blue blossoms are strikingly marked with soft, central bands of deep blue, and are borne on airy, branched stems from early through midsummer. They rise atop mounds of rich green, deeply divided foliage, and may be visited by bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.
Delphiniums prefer full sun and moist, fertile, well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. Thriving in areas with cool to moderate summer weather, they falter when exposed to very hot temperatures. Taller varieties may require staking to avoid toppling, and windy sites should be avoided. After the flowers fade, promptly cut back the stems to encourage possible reblooming. Monitor closely for slugs and snails in spring, as these can damage new growth.
The beautiful colors and striking vertical habit of delphiniums add drama to mixed beds and borders. Their gorgeous blooms also make outstanding cut flowers. Often short-lived, these perennials are frequently treated as annuals or biennials, particularly in areas with long, hot summers.
