DELPHINIUM grandiflorum 'Blue Butterfly'
Blue Butterfly Larkspur
Delphinium ‘Blue Butterfly’ is a low-growing perennial which produces loose sprays of vivid, deep blue flowers from late spring to early summer. It is a form of Chinese delphinium, a species native to sunny meadows of northern and eastern Asia. Its single, spurred blossoms are borne on short, well-branched stems which rise from feathery mounds of rich green, fine-textured foliage. The showy blooms are attractive to bees and butterflies, and may continue to reappear throughout much of the summer if kept properly deadheaded.
Grow this diminutive delphinium in full sun and moist, fertile, well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. Thriving in areas with cool to moderate summer weather, it may falter if exposed to very hot temperatures. Its faded flower stems should be cut to the ground as they fade to encourage reblooming. Monitor closely for slugs and snails in spring, as these can damage new growth.
The bright flowers, short stature and long blooming habit of ‘Blue Butterfly’ make it perfect for containers or the front of mixed beds and borders. Its airy blooms are long-lasting in the vase, and make a striking filler for bouquets. Often short-lived, this perennial may be treated as an annual or biennial, particularly in areas with long, hot summers. However, it will also self-sow if allowed, ensuring a continuous supply of plants.
