DELPHINIUM( GUARDIAN SERIES)
Guardian Delphinium
Guardian Series delphiniums are vigorous hybrids which produce tall spires of blue, lavender or white blossoms from late spring to early summer. Their semi-double flowers are densely borne on strong, slender stems, and feature small white “bees”, or central tufts of stamens. They rise from clumps of deeply lobed, rich green foliage, and are visited by hummingbirds, bees and butterflies.
Plant delphiniums in full sun and moist, fertile, well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. Preferring areas with cool to moderate summer weather, they falter when exposed to very hot temperatures. The tall flowering stems may require staking to prevent toppling, and windy sites should be avoided. After the flowers fade, promptly cut back the stems to any lower flowering side shoots to encourage extended blooming. Monitor closely for slugs and snails in spring, as these can damage new growth.
Tall delphiniums add drama to mixed beds and borders with their beautiful colors and striking vertical habit. Their gorgeous blooms also make outstanding cut flowers. Often short-lived, these perennials are frequently treated as annuals or biennials, particularly in areas with long, hot summers.
