DELPHINIUM 'King Arthur'( ROUND TABLE SERIES)
Delphinium, Larkspur, Pacific Giant King Arthur Larkspur
Delphinium ‘King Arthur’ produces long spires of rich violet-blue flowers which tower over the garden in early to midsummer. A Pacific Giant hybrid, it is part of the Round Table Series, each of which features a name relevant to Camelot. Its spurred, semi-double flowers are densely packed on very tall stems, and feature small white “bees”, or central tufts of stamens. The showy blooms arise from clumps of deeply-lobed, rich green foliage, and are visited by hummingbirds, bees and butterflies.
Plant delphiniums in full sun and moist, fertile, well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. Preferring areas with cool to moderate summer weather, they falter when exposed to very hot temperatures. The tall flowering stems may require staking to prevent toppling, and windy sites should be avoided. After the flowers fade, promptly cut back the stems to any lower flowering side shoots to encourage extended blooming. A second display of flowers may be produced in mid-autumn. Monitor closely for slugs and snails in spring, as these can damage new growth.
Tall delphiniums add drama to mixed beds and borders with their beautiful colors and majestic, imposing height. Their gorgeous blooms also make outstanding cut flowers. Often short-lived, these perennials are frequently treated as annuals or biennials, particularly in areas with long, hot summers.
