General Description

Decorating its slender stems with a light scattering of orange-red flowers in summer, scarlet larkspur attracts hummingbirds with the trumpet-shaped blossoms. A short-lived perennial with a slender habit, it is native to southwestern Oregon and northern California in the western United States.

The green, fleshy leaves are deeply lobed, resembling small maple (Acer) or columbine (Aquilegia) leaves. Long, burgundy-gray stalks rise above the clump of foliage in early to midsummer and hold a loose, sparse cluster of bright orange-red or yellow flowers. Shaped like trumpets, each bloom may have a red or yellow throat and look like they are balancing mid-way atop the stem to which they are attached.

Grow scarlet larkspur in full sun to partial shade in soils that are fertile but well-draining. Pretty planted among other summer-blooming perennials in a border or cottage garden, it is also well-suited for roadside verges or open woodlands. Cultivar 'Laurin' is a smaller, compact selection with vibrant red flowers and 'Redcap' blooms are scarlet; each has deep green glossy leaves.
