Family

Ranunculaceae

Botanical Name

DELPHINIUM nudicaule 'Redcap'

Plant Common Name

Delphinium, Larkspur, Redcap Larkspur, Scarlet Larkspur

General Description

Offering a departure from the blue shades typical of most delphiniums, ‘Red Cap’ decorates its slender stems with bright, coral-red flowers in summer. This compact, long-blooming delphinium is a cultivar of scarlet larkspur, a species native to northern California and southwestern Oregon. Its scarlet, trumpet-shaped blooms are borne loosely on slender, branched stems from late spring through midsummer. They rise from basal clumps of fleshy, three to five-lobed, dark green leaves, and are attractive to hummingbirds.

Grow this unique delphinium in full sun to partial shade and fertile soil with excellent drainage. Trim back its faded flower stems periodically to encourage heavier reblooming. Often short-lived, this perennial is frequently treated as an annual or biennial, but may be allowed to self-sow if desired, ensuring a continuous supply of plants.

Scarlet larkspur ‘Red Cap’ looks lovely when planted among other summer-blooming perennials in a border or cottage garden, and is well-suited to naturalistic plantings in open to lightly shaded settings. Its compact habit and floriferous nature also make it a great choice for container compositions.
