Delphinium, Larkspur, Starmaker Larkspur
Delphinium ‘Starmaker’ was developed for its unusually colored, lavender-blue flowers marked with central streaks of green on each petal. The single, spurred blossoms are borne on airy, branched stems from early to midsummer atop bushy mounds of rich green, deeply lobed foliage. Varying in color according to light conditions, the flowers may be darker blue in bright sun, while developing greener tones in partial shade. This distinctive hybrid possesses the unique ability to send up new flowering stems from the centers of fading blossoms.
Delphiniums prefer full sun and moist, fertile, well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. Thriving in areas with cool to moderate summer weather, they falter when exposed to very hot temperatures. Taller varieties may require staking to avoid toppling, and windy sites should be avoided. After the flowers fade, promptly cut back the stems to encourage a possible second show of flowers in autumn. Monitor closely for slugs and snails in spring, as these can damage new growth.
The beautiful colors and striking vertical habit of delphiniums add drama to mixed beds and borders. Their gorgeous blooms also make outstanding cut flowers. Often short-lived, these perennials are frequently treated as annuals or biennials, particularly in areas with long, hot summers.
