Family

Poaceae

Botanical Name

DESCHAMPSIA flexuosa 'Aurea'

Plant Common Name

Crinkled Hairgrass, Golden Crinkled Hairgrass, Wavy Hairgrass

General Description

Golden crinkled hairgrass is a cool-season, clumping, evergreen grass featuring appealing golden-green foliage. Highly adaptable, the species is native to a wide range of habitats in all continents except Australia, Africa and Antarctica. In early summer, it sends up slender stems topped with airy flower panicles which seem to hover like mist above its narrow, thread-like leaves. The delicate bloom sprays feature tiny, apricot-colored flowers that give way to small, tan seeds which are enjoyed by numerous songbirds. Wildlife friendly, the plants themselves provide cover for small birds and mammals, particularly in the cold winter months.

This lovely ornamental grass thrives in full sun to partial shade and fertile, acidic soils high in organic matter. Notable for its tolerance of dry, shaded sites, crinkled hairgrass also grows easily in moist soils. Plant it in masses beneath the branches of taller trees such as oaks, or in average to moist soil pockets in meadows or mixed borders. For best appearance, cut down the winter foliage in early spring before the new, fresh growth flushes out. The tall flowering stems are lovely in both fresh and dried arrangements.
