Family
Saxifragaceae
Botanical Name
DEUTZIA crenata 'Pride of Rochester'
Plant Common Name
Crenate Deutzia, Pride of Rochester Crenate Deutzia
General Description
The rich green foliage of deutzia ‘Pride of Rochester’ pairs beautifully with its sweet-scented clusters of double, white to pale pink flowers borne in summer. Forming a broad, spreading outline, the arching stems of this deciduous shrub are lined with tapered, oval-shaped leaves held in opposite pairs. In late spring to early summer, loose clusters of pink buds open to fragrant, double, white, star-shaped flowers edged in pink. In autumn the foliage may carry tones of burgundy-purple, depending on the arrival of cool temperatures in the region.
Adaptable to many situations, 'Pride of Rochester' grows easily in full to partial sun and average soils, and is somewhat drought tolerant once established. If desired, it may be pruned back after flowering to maintain the shrub's shape and size. Avoid planting in sites exposed to strong winds. Use this lovely deutzia as a specimen in the mixed border or to soften the corner of a building in a foundation bed.
