Plant Common Name
Fuzzy Deutzia
General Description
Fuzzy Deutzia is a tall, deciduous shrub with interesting bark native to Japan and China. Arching branches hold medium-sized, broad, oval to oblong leaves with pointed tips Dark green to olive green and hairy; the leaves have slightly scalloped margins and do not have noticeable fall color. Sweetly scented flowers appear in the summer for a few weeks in dense, narrow, branched groups at the ends of the branches. Each flower is white, star-shaped with many petals. There are pink flowered cultivars. Fruits are small, cup-shaped capsules which persist throughout the winter. Peeling orange, cinnamon and brown bark is an interesting feature.
Plant fuzzy Deutzia in full sun in any moist soil with ample drainage. They will tolerate some shade. Easy to transplant and grow, this shrub can be weedy and look messy. Prune after flowering for a neater appearance and cut a few branches to the ground every few years to begin rejuvenation pruning. Use fuzzy Deutzia in shrubbery borders, informal hedges and at the edges of woodlands.
