General Description

Resembling a mountain laurel when in full floral splendor, this deciduous shrub lines its arching branches with thousands of deep pink and white flowers in early summer. Ultimately becoming a rounded plant with open branching, the kalmia-flowered deutzia is a hybrid resulting from a cross between Deutzia purpurescens and Deutzia parviflora. It was created by renowned French nurseryman Victor Lemoine as has been in cultivation since around 1900.

Its long, pointed oval leaves are narrow and light to medium green with tiny teeth on their edges. After leafing out, in early summer the twigs are densely lined with rounded, upright clusters of deep rosy pink flowers, each saucer-like with five petals with pink stripes on their backsides, attracting bees. In autumn the foliage becomes purpled. The bark is brown and on larger branches reveals it is exfoliating.

Grow kalmia-flowered hybrid deutzia in full sun in any fertile soil that is well-draining. It is very adaptable to soil pH and soil types, but it is best in a situation where dry or wet conditions can prevail. It should be pruned only immediately after flowering and it respondes well to severe cutbacks to allow full rejuvenation of the plant. Use it in the foundation bed or mixed border for added early summer beauty. From a distance it looks like either a billowing mountain laurel or a mounding old-fashioned rose when in bloom.
