General Description

One of the cold-hardiest of deutzia, this deciduous shrub lines its twiggy upright branches with thousands of small white flowers in early summer. Ultimately becoming a rounded plant with dense branching, the Lemoine deutzia is a hybrid resulting from a cross between Deutzia gracilis and Deutzia parviflora. It is named after its hybridizer, notable French nurseryman Victor Lemoine.

Its long, pointed green leaves are nearly lance-shaped with lighter green and hairy undersides. After leafing out, in early summer, the twigs are densely lined with clusteres of white flowers, each with five petals and a yellow splash of pollen-carrying anthers that will attract bees. In autumn the foliage becomes yellow. The bark is brown and on larger branches reveals it is exfoliating.

Grow Lemoine deutzia in full sun in any fertile soil that is well-draining. It is very adaptable to soil pH and soil types, but it is best in a situation where dry or wet conditions can prevail. It should be pruned only immediately after flowering and it respondes well to severe cutbacks to allow full rejuvenation of the plant. Use it in the foundation bed or mixed border for added early summer beauty or as an informal hedge or screen. Although considered very cold hardy, it is best positioned in a protected spot in USDA zone 4, especially out of cold drying winter winds.
