DIANTHUS barbatus( BARBARINI™ RED, BARBARINI™ SERIES)
Barbarini™ Sweet William, Sweet William
A new take on an old favorite, sweet william Barbarini™ Red is distinguished by its compact habit and ability to bloom the first year from seed. It bears large, fragrant clusters of fringed, deep red flowers with small, lavender eyes which bloom from late spring through midsummer. They rise on short, sturdy stems amid tufts of narrow, deep green foliage, and are visited by bees and butterflies.
Sweet william is a short-lived perennial which is commonly treated as an annual or biennial. Originally native to Europe, this cottage garden classic self-sows readily to form charming colonies. Plant it in full to part sun and well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil. Prompt removal of spent flower stems encourages prolonged bloom display. Barbarini™ Red is a fine choice for containers or massing at the front of mixed beds and borders.
