Botanical Name

DIANTHUS barbatus( Indian Carpet Mix)

Plant Common Name

Indian Carpet Sweet William, Sweet William

General Description

Sweet William (Dianthus barbatus) is a short-lived perennial native to southern Europe and long prized in gardens for its flat-topped heads of colorful, often spotted flowers. Indian Carpet is a compact, seed-grown strain of sweet William noted for its dense, dwarf habit and showy, dark-eyed flowers. The large heads of white, pink, and red blooms are particularly eye-catching en masse. The foliage is green and lance-shaped. Plant in full sun and moist, well-drained soil that is neutral to slightly alkaline. Deadhead for longevity and to prevent self-sowing. Indian Carpet works well as an edging, container, or bedding plant, and is a favorite of butterflies and hummingbirds.
