James H. Schutte

Family

Caryophyllaceae

Botanical Name

DIANTHUS 'Bouquet Purple'( BOUQUET SERIES)

Plant Common Name

Bouquet Purple Pinks, Hybrid Pinks

General Description

This heavy-flowering hybrid offers bright purple-pink blooms early in the season. The upright, branched flower stems rise from clumps of waxy, strappy, evergreen leaves in spring. They become covered with fragrant lacy blooms that are much loved by bees. Deadheading will encourage further bloom but the first flush is always the heaviest.

The Dianthus in the Bouquet Series were developed for the cut flower industry but are great for home gardeners too. They have long, strong stems topped with lots of colorful small pinked flowers. These vigorous hybrids are the product of a cross between Sweet William (Dianthus barbatus) and China pinks (D. chinensis and bloom in the first year from seed.

Grow Dianthus in full to partial sun and any well-drained garden soil with a neutral to alkaline pH. Regular water keeps the foliage looking nice but plants will also withstand short periods of drought. They are low-maintenance, easy to grow and ideal for cutting gardens, large containers or any perennial garden with high light.

The Bouquet Series was awarded the Mississippi Medallion Award for excellent performance in southern climates and the Minnesota Perennial Select Award for their high performance and cold tolerance.
