General Description

The large colorful blooms of Floristan carnations are borne on tall, stout, flop-resistant stems. These seed-propagated carnations were developed for commercial growers but also work well in ornamental and cutting gardens.

Famous for their large, colorful, and often fragrant double flowers, florist's carnations result from centuries of breeding of the Mediterranean native Dianthus caryophyllus. The flowers are held on tall jointed stems above evergreen tufts of linear, grass-like, blue-green leaves. Floristan carnations bear large white, pink, red, or yellow blooms on sturdy stems that exceed knee-height. Bloom continues from late spring to late summer.

Floristan carnations thrive in full to part sun and well-drained neutral to alkaline soil. Performing best in areas with cool summers, they benefit from additional shade where summer temperatures are very hot. They can be grown as annuals in areas where they are not winter-hardy. Sow their seed outdoors in fall (in areas where they are winter-hardy), or indoors in late winter for planting out in early spring. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage heavier reblooming. Use Floristan carnations in cottage gardens, containers, and mixed borders. Their lovely, butterfly-enticing blossoms also make excellent cut flowers.
