DIANTHUS caryophyllus 'Floristan White'( FLORISTAN SERIES)
Carnation, Floristan White Carnation
The large white blooms of this florist's carnation are borne on tall, stout, flop-resistant stems. This seed-propagated cultivar was developed for commercial growers but also works well in ornamental and cutting gardens.
Famous for their large, colorful, and often fragrant double flowers, florist's carnations result from centuries of breeding of the Mediterranean native Dianthus caryophyllus. The flowers are held on tall jointed stems above evergreen tufts of linear, grass-like, blue-green leaves. The fragrant blooms of 'Floristan White' appear from late spring to late summer on stems that exceed knee-height.
Carnations thrive in full to part sun and well-drained neutral to alkaline soil. Performing best in areas with cool summers, they benefit from additional shade where summer temperatures are very hot. They can be grown as annuals in areas where they are not winter-hardy. Sow 'Floristan White' outdoors in fall (in areas where they are winter-hardy), or indoors in late winter for planting out in early spring. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage heavier reblooming. Use Floristan carnations in cottage gardens, containers, and mixed borders. Their lovely, butterfly-enticing blossoms also make excellent cut flowers.
