DIANTHUS caryophyllus( GRENADIN SERIES)
Grenadin Series border pinks produce a summer display of fragrant, double flowers in solid and bicolor shades of red, pink, pale yellow and white. They are borne profusely on slender, sturdy stems which rise from compact tufts of linear, grasslike, blue-green foliage. The colorful blossoms appear from late spring through midsummer, and may attract bees and butterflies.
Long valued for their showy, sweetly fragrant flowers, border pinks are descended from an evergreen species native to the Mediterranean. These herbaceous perennials thrive in full to part sun and well-drained neutral to alkaline soil. Performing best in areas with cool summers, they benefit from additional shade where summer temperatures are very hot. Regular removal of faded flower stems encourages heavier reblooming. Use them in rock gardens, containers or well-drained mixed beds and borders. Their lovely blossoms also make excellent, long lasting cut flowers.
