General Description

Known for their dwarf, compact habit, large-size flowers and improved tolerance to summer heat, the Diana Series of hybrid pinks or carnations comprise about 12 selections. Developed by the Dutch company Hem Genetics, they are short-lived perennials that are most often grown as annual bedding plants. Their neat clumps of green to dark green, waxy, narrow leaves are topped with single-form flowers from early spring through midsummer, depending on local climate. Flower diameters range between 1 and 2.5 inches (3 to 6 cm). Petal edges are jagged and look lacy or frilled. The blooms are held on short, sturdy stems and appear in a range of solids and bicolors or "picotees." Depending on cultivar in the series, flower color ranges from white, pink, red and red-violet, and all shades in between.

Offering good tolerance to both summer heat and winter cold, these dwarf perennials are seldom troubled by pests or diseases. Grow them in full to partial sun and well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Avoid overwatering, as this can cause crown and root rot. Regular removal of spent flower stems encourages heavier flowering. Diana Series carnations are a terrific choice for containers, rock gardens or sunny mixed border foregrounds.
