DIANTHUS gratianapolitanus 'Spotty'

Image of Dianthus gratianapolitanus 'Spotty'

Gerald L. Klingaman

Family

Caryophyllaceae

Botanical Name

DIANTHUS gratianapolitanus 'Spotty'

Plant Common Name

Cheddar Pinks, Spotty Cheddar Pinks

General Description

The small flowers of ‘Spotty’ (sometimes called ‘Spotti’) are white with rose-red markings and spots. This floriferous hardy perennial is robust, easy to grow, and blooms for an extended period of time.

Most of the year the cheddar pink only offers low, dense mounds of gray-green, grassy foliage, but in early summer it becomes covered with lots of small, fringed, colorful flowers. These offer a spicy sweet fragrance that scents the air. Remove the spent flowers after the flush fades to keep plants looking tidy and attractive.

The cheddar pink reigns from the mountainous regions in Central Europe, so it is tough and sun-loving. It prefers perfectly drained, slightly alkaline soil, is quite drought tolerant and can take a little more heat than your average alpine. Place 'Spotty' in sunny, rocky garden spots. It looks especially lovely spilling over the top of a retaining wall or along the edge of a garden path with stepping stones.
