Family

Caryophyllaceae

Botanical Name

DIANTHUS gratianapolitanus 'Tiny Rubies'

Plant Common Name

Cheddar Pinks, Tiny Rubies Cheddar Pinks

General Description

The aptly named ‘Tiny Rubies’ offers a carpet of glistening, double ruby pink flowers in early summer. It is a hardy perennial with a long bloom time and robust nature.

Most of the year the cheddar pink only offers low, dense mounds of gray-green, grassy foliage, but in early summer it becomes covered with lots of small, fringed double flowers. These offer a spicy sweet fragrance that scents the air. Remove the spent flowers after the flush fades to keep plants looking tidy and attractive.

Cheddar pinks are alpines that originate from the montane regions of Central Europe. They are quite drought tolerant and can take a little more heat than most alpines. Plant them in full sun and perfectly drained, slightly alkaline soil for best growth and flowering. They are ideal for sunny rocky garden spots and look especially lovely spilling over the top of retaining walls or along garden paths with stepping stones.
