Debbie Schilling

Family

Caryophyllaceae

Botanical Name

DIANTHUS gratianopolitanus 'Firewitch' ('Feuerhexe')

Plant Common Name

Firewitch Cheddar Pinks, Firewitch Dianthus

General Description

This vibrant cheddar pink is a popular bedding perennial that was named the Perennial Plant of the Year in 2006 by the Perennial Plant Association. It is distinguished by its long bloom time, fine flower color and vigorous, floriferous nature. Plants may bloom for two weeks or in flushes across three or four months.

The pretty and easy 'Firewitch' forms low, dense mounds of gleaming gray-green, grassy foliage that is evergreen. In late spring to early summer, it becomes covered with single stems of rosy pink flowers. These offer a spicy sweet fragrance that scents the air, especially in the still air of the evening. Remove the spent flowers after the flush fades to keep plants looking tidy and attractive.

Cheddar pinks are alpines that originate from the montane regions of Central Europe. They are quite drought tolerant and can take a little more heat than most alpines. Plant them in full sun and perfectly drained, slightly alkaline soil for best growth and flowering. They are ideal for sunny rocky garden spots and look especially lovely spilling over the top of retaining walls or along garden paths with stepping stones.
