DIANTHUS 'Old Spice'

Image of Dianthus 'Old Spice'

Jessie Keith

Family

Caryophyllaceae

Botanical Name

DIANTHUS 'Old Spice'

Plant Common Name

Dianthus, Old Spice Dianthus

General Description

The favorite, old-fashioned ‘Old Spice’ has charming, extremely fragrant, salmon to coral-pink flowers. This hybrid perennial has a pretty cottage garden look and is easy to grow if given the right conditions.

Like most pinks, ‘Old Spice’ offers mounds of silvery blue, linear leaves that are evergreen. From late spring into midsummer, its branched, upright stems carry fragrant, fully double blossoms of salmon to coral-pink with jagged edges. The blooms look like small carnations and are great for cutting. Deadheading will keep the plants looking clean and may encourage more flowers.

Grow Dianthus in full to partial sun and any well-drained garden soil with a neutral to alkaline pH. It is low-maintenance and has few pest and disease problems, though overwatering can cause crown and root rot. High heat also reduces vigor and discourages flowering. Enjoy this in a trough or rock garden, along border edges or any garden space with highly drained soil and good light. This cultivar's blooms are unsurpassed as cutflowers.
