DIASCIA 'Dala Oran'( FLIRTATION® ORANGE, FLIRTATION® SERIES) PPAF
Plant Common Name
Flirtation® Orange Twinspur, Twinspur
The prolific and long-flowered Flirtation® Orange twinspur has a compact, rounded habit and produces loads of densely packed, vibrant flowers of coral orange. Its commonly grown as a bedding annual but where hardy it survives as an evergreen perennial.
This fine, herbaceous plant has wiry stems and small, heart-shaped leaves. Delicate, coral-orange flowers appear all season as long as growing conditions are not too hot and water is regular. Each twinspur flower is tubular with a prominent lip and two rear spurs, or nectaries, which hold nectar for bees and butterflies. Hummingbirds have also been known to visit the blooms.
Grow twinspur in full to partial sun and porous, friable, humus-rich soil with an acid to neutral pH. It performs best where summers are cooler and needs constant moisture, especially when grown in containers or placed in warmer, more exposed locations. In very hot months flowering may cease but will resume when temperatures cool in autumn. Trim back plants after blooming wanes to encourage fresh growth and new blooms.
Twinspurs are small and tend to trail, so they are ideal for pots, hanging baskets, window boxes or border edges. Treat them as cool-season annuals where tender.
