Family

Scrophulariaceae

Botanical Name

DIGITALIS purpurea( Excelsior Group)

Plant Common Name

Common Foxglove, Excelsior Group Foxglove

General Description

Foxglove is a biennial or short-lived perennial native to the Mediterranean region of Europe. The Excelsior group features tall spikes of tubular flowers in shades of pink, purple or white with spotted throats that completely surround the stem. The flower stems arising from a mound of strap-like basal foliage in the summer. The flowers are very attractive to bees. Like most foxglove, the ‘Excelsior’ cultivars self-seed prolifically, but are not considered invasive. The propensity to self-seed compensates for a short life span, as the seedlings may produce multiple new plants around the base of the parent plant.

Foxglove grows best in full to partial sun and appreciates humus rich soil with average to good drainage. The foxglove ‘Excelsior’ selections are striking plants and make fine additions to perennial borders or cottage gardens, its blooms make excellent cut flowers.
