General Description

Pretty pink, pendulous flowers dangle from a tall spike in late spring, making pink foxglove an unique, airy foxglove species for the cottage garden. A semi-evergreen herbaceous perennial that will reseed itself, it is native to the Mediterranean lands of southwestern Europe, primarily Spain.

Its green leaves are downy and narrower than those of other foxgloves. In late spring, tall stems arise from the clump of foliage and reveal drooping, tubular flowers that are held away from the stem. These rosy pink flowers have a speckled white throat and attract bumblebees and hummingbirds. Seeds will be dropped nearby and germinate to eventually create a mass of young plants.

Grow pink foxglove in full or partial sun exposures in any average to well-drained soil that has organic matter incorporated. Avoid very acidic or very alkaline soil extremes and overwatering. Short-lived, it will reseed itself in the garden, allowing gardeners to continue enjoying this species even though plants may not individually live more than four years. Promptly remove spent flowers to diminish reseeding. Use it as a unifying perennial accent in mixed borders and cottage gardens; the long flower stems are nice cut and enjoyed indoors. Selection 'Spanish Peaks' has blooms that are pink with blushes of rose-red.
