Family

Scrophulariaceae

Botanical Name

DIGITALIS x mertonensis

Plant Common Name

Strawberry Foxglove

General Description

The tall spikes of this exceptional foxglove are the color of crushed strawberries. The strawberry foxglove is a naturally occurring cross between the yellow-flowered Digitalis grandiflora and lavender-rose-flowered D. purpurea. It is a vigorous hardy short-lived perennial that will make any early season garden shine.

This tall clump-forming plant puts forth a neat rosette of soft leaves early in the season. From late spring to early summer it sends up tall spikes of tubular bell-like flowers that are rose-red with a hint or apricot. The blooms are a delight to bees and make spectacular cutflowers.

Grow foxgloves in full to partial sun. They are quite adaptable but grow best in well-drained soil that is moderately fertile. Once flowers are spent cut them back to keep the rosette looking neat. Foxgloves have a tendency to self-sow but not aggressively. It is best to plant strawberry foxglove with ornamentals that look good later in the season, because once they have finished flowering they offer little visual appeal.

All Digitalis produce a compound called digitoxin. There are health concerns related to foxgloves because of this harmful compound. To learn more go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digitoxin
