General Description

A pretty South African daisy that bursts with flowers in white, yellow, orange or pink, cape-marigold is a fantastic bedding annual that prospers in dry sun and warmth. An upright tender perennial that often grow as an annual flower, the blossoms usually have a purple-brown center disc.

The fragrant foliage is mid-green in color and are lance-like with coarse teeth. In the warmth of summer, so long as the soil is not overly wet, each plant produces many daisies that will attract butterflies and occasional bumblebees. Blossom petals are usually tinged purple at their bases and either white, yellow, orange or pink. The seedheads are a dark brown and should be removed to encourage continual flowering flushes.

Grow cape-marigold in full sun exposures in a light (friable), well-draining soil that is fertile. Protect from winds for best plant form. It will become a longer-lasting perennial in regions with warm summers and moist winters; protect from overly wet winters and soils. It is a great wildflower for a dry meadow or rockery or for annual bedding displays, containers or fillers for the garden border.
