Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

DORONICUM pardalianches

Plant Common Name

Great Leopard's Bane

General Description

The bright lemon yellow daisies of great leopard’s bane stand on tall thin stems and bloom from late spring to midsummer. It is a hardy herbaceous perennial native to western and central Europe. Though uncommon in the garden, it offers height and bright color to the early border.

The slightly heart-shaped of this daisy are light to medium green and form basal clumps that spread over time and form a substantial mass. The cauline leaves that line the flower stems are lance-shaped. From late spring to midsummer, the tall, branched stems carry cheerful yellow daisies that are visited by butterflies and bees. The brown seedheads are unattractive and should be removed after flowering.

This is a perennial that thrives best where summers are cool. It withstand full sun to partial shade and grows best in fertile, moist, friable soil. Drought and high heat will cause great leopard’s bane to become dormant in late summer or fall, once flowering subsides. Division may be needed every two to three years. The clumps are best split in autumn, once plants have become dormant.

Cut Doronicum flowers for long-lasting arrangements. It is a perfect candidate for cottage gardens and mixed borders.

The old name for this species is Doronicum cordatum
