General Description

A perennial succulent grown for its handsome ground-hugging rosettes of fleshy evergreen leaves, this Southern California native is found only in a few areas of San Diego and Orange counties. Each rosette comprises 15 to 50 narrowly cylindrical, finger-shaped, green or yellow-green leaves that are coated with a sticky aromatic exudate. Plants spread gradually to form broad clumps of rosettes. Older rosettes may develop short stems. Branching clusters of starry pinkish flowers perch on erect calf-high to knee-high stalks in late spring and early summer. The blooms attract hummingbirds and butterflies.

This handsome succulent requires ample sun and dry summers (provide midday shade where summers are hot). Grow it in a cool greenhouse in a porous mix, or in the garden where winters are mild and summers dry. Remove spent flower stems for appearance and to prevent self-sowing. Propagate by offsets in spring or early summer. Its geometric foliage complements the forms of other dryland plants.
