Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

ECHINACEA purpurea 'Bright Star' ('Leuchtstern')

Plant Common Name

Bright Star Coneflower, Eastern Purple Coneflower, Purple Coneflower

General Description

The coneflower ‘Bright Star’ is a tall herbaceous perennial grown for its strong-stemmed large lavender-pink daisies with rich orange-brown cones. In late spring to early summer, numerous flowers arise from tall, leafy stems. The blooming season may be extended if spent flowers are removed, or deadheaded.

Purple coneflower is a dependable garden staple that self-sows freely, though cultivars like ‘Bright Star’ will not grow true from seed. It is happiest when planted in sites with full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile garden soil. This carefree native is an excellent choice for perennial gardens, mixed borders or wildflower plantings.

Coneflowers make great cutflowers. The fresh blooms also attract butterflies, and the dry seed-filled cones draw seed-eating birds, finches in particular. Even better, purple coneflower is quite disease resistant and deer do not favor it.
