ECHINACEA purpurea 'Indiaca'

Image of Echinacea purpurea 'Indiaca'

Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

ECHINACEA purpurea 'Indiaca'

Plant Common Name

Eastern Purple Coneflower, Indiaca Coneflower, Purple Coneflower

General Description

The odd semi-double coneflowers of 'Indiaca' are colorful and interesting. This tall perennial has an upright habit, and its purple-pink daisies have orange-brown conical centers topped with plumes of purple-pink ray petals. Purple coneflower originates from eastern North America where it inhabits open prairies, meadows, roadsides and forest margins.

Coneflower is a dependable garden staple that is happiest when planted in sites with full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile garden soil. It self-sows freely and will sometimes flower in the first year from seed. The seedlings can be highly variable, and those of most named cultivars, like 'Indiaca', will not grow true to seed.

This carefree native is an excellent choice for perennial gardens, mixed borders or wildflower plantings. Its blooms also make great cutflowers. In addition, the fresh blooms attract butterflies and dry seed-filled cones draw seed-eating birds. Even better, purple coneflower is moderately disease resistant and deer do not favor it.
