Plant Common Name

Eastern Purple Coneflower, Pink Double Delight Coneflower

General Description

The patented coneflower 'Pink Double Delight’ is a compact herbaceous perennial known for its strong-stemmed double pink daisies. In late spring to early summer, numerous flowers arise from short stems. These have long clear pink ray petals surrounding a dense cluster of shorter frilled deep pink florets. The blooming season may be extended if spent flowers are removed, or deadheaded.

Purple coneflower is a dependable garden staple that self-sows freely, and 'Pink Double Delight’ will reliably flower in the first year after sowing; though it will not bloom true from seed. It is happiest when planted in sites with full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile garden soil. This carefree native is an excellent choice for perennial gardens, mixed borders or wildflower plantings. Its short stature also makes is suitable for windy gardens and containers.

Coneflowers make great cutflowers. Their fresh blooms also attract butterflies and the dry seed-filled cones draw seed-eating birds, finches in particular. Those seeking deer-resistant plants should also consider planting purple coneflower as it’s not one of their favorites.
