General Description

Is it true? A purple coneflower with variegated leaves? Yes! Found as a seedling growing in a bed of Bravado coneflowers in the mid 1990s, 'Prairie Frost' was selected for this unique foliage characteristic. In early to midsummer, the stems bear daisy-like flowers with violet-tinted rosy petals around a bronze-orange cone. If the old flowers are promptly cut away, or deadheaded, additional flowering occurs and can be extended well into late summer.

Purple coneflower is happiest when planted in sites with full sun and well-drained moderately fertile garden soil; do not worry about fertilizing for best flowering. The blooms of 'Prairie Frost' make great cutflowers, attract butterflies, and the dry seedheads feed seed-eating birds in winter. Even better, deer don't feast on it in the garden. It’s a tough, versatile perennial perfect for well-tended borders and wildflower plantings alike.
