Family

Botanical Name

ECHINACEA purpurea 'Prairie Splendor'

Plant Common Name

Eastern Purple Coneflower, Prairie Splendor Coneflower, Purple Coneflower

General Description

The coneflower 'Prairie Splendor' is an herbaceous perennial known for its short bushy habit and pretty rose-pink daisies. In late spring to early summer, numerous flowers arise from short stems. These have rose-pink petals surrounding a large orange-brown cone. The blooming season may be extended if spent flowers are removed, or deadheaded.

Coneflower is a dependable garden staple that is happiest when planted in sites with full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile garden soil. It self-sows freely and will sometimes flower in the first year from seed. The seedlings can be highly variable, and those of cultivars, like 'Prairie Splendor', will not grow true to seed.

This carefree native is an excellent choice for perennial gardens, mixed borders or wildflower plantings. Its short stature also makes is suitable for windy gardens and containers. Coneflowers also attract butterflies, make great long-lasting cutflowers and are not favored by deer.
