Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

ECHINACEA purpurea 'Razzmatazz' PP13894

Plant Common Name

Eastern Purple Coneflower, Purple Coneflower, Razzmatazz Coneflower

General Description

The coneflower ‘Razzmatazz’ is regarded for its unique doubled rose-pink flowers and sturdy upright habit. In late spring to early summer, numerous anemone-like flowers form atop long leafy stems. The blooms have short, downward-angled, pink petals that surround an enlarged red-purple or deep pink cone that looks like a pompon. These are slightly fragrant and will bloom for longer if spent flowers are removed, or deadheaded.

A dependable garden staple, purple coneflower self-sows freely and will reliably flower in the first year. It is happiest when planted in sites with full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile garden soil. This carefree native is an excellent choice for perennial gardens, mixed borders or wildflower plantings.

Coneflowers make great cutflowers. In addition, their fresh blooms attract butterflies and the dry seed-filled cones draw seed-eating birds. Those seeking deer-resistant plants should also consider planting purple coneflower, because it’s not favored by the four legged pests.
