Botanical Name
Elaeagnus x ebbingei 'Gilt Edge'
Plant Common Name
Ebbing's Silverberry, Gilt Edge Silverberry
General Description
Ebbing’s silverberry ‘Gilt Edge’ is a tough, fast-growing, large shrub of hybrid origin. It has interesting elliptical leaves, scruffy to the tough and eye, dark green in the center with striking, irregular yellow margins. Elaeagnus tends to grow rapidly with long branches - a semi-climbing habit. The branches are thornless. The extremely fragrant, tiny white to silver flowers are bell-shaped with spreading lobes and are produced in the fall and winter at the joint between leaves and branches in clusters. The lovely red to pink fruit with silver mottling follows the flowers in spring. The fruit and seed are edible and pleasant.
Elaeagnus are some of the most durable shrubs, tolerant of most soil conditions as long as it is well drained. Very alkaline soils can cause nutrient deficiencies, but are easily corrected with applications of minor elements. Full sun is preferred as it is for many variegated plants. Ebbing’s silverberry is very salt, wind and pest tolerant. Ebbing’s silverberry is a little more compact than other silverberries, but still requires pruning to keep the long branches in check. Use the large, rangy plant in hedges, as a wind break and in thick, protective borders.
