General Description

Blue wheatgrass is a breathtaking clumping ornamental grass with fine foliage colored silvery blue. A native of the cooler lands and mountains of Chile and Argentina, it is a semi-evergreen perennial in the mildest of winter climates. The leaves are its glory, being most intense blue in the central younger growth, as the older leaves are pushed outward and downward to create a skirt. In late spring and summer, the often overlooked, small flowers appear on stems that tend to be held horizontally in the clump.

Blue wheatgrass should be planted in average, well-draining soils in the garden, although it will handle poorer and drier soils with lest robust growth and coloring, often showing more tan and silver tones. Avoid too much humidity (offset with good plant spacing and air flow) and very wet soils, especially in winter. In hot, drier desert climes, insure it grows with shading from the hottest sun. With amazing foliar texture and color, this grass is tremendous when grown in clusters or in groundcover mats. Contrast it with any other colored plant, especially those with dark green, chartreuse, or reddened leaves or perennials with pink flowers. This species makes for an outstanding container plant as well.
