General Description

At home in rock gardens and stone wall crevices, hybrid storksbill shines in early summer when it becomes covered with small cupped blooms that are deep red with maroon veins. It is a low, mounding but spreading evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial, a hybrid formed by the cross of Erodium corsicum and Erodium reichardii, both natives of Mediterranean isles.

Small, oval, green leaves with a hint of gray cover this plant all season. They have scalloped edges or lobes and a slight fragrance. In summertime, small flowers appear across the mass of foliage. Each bloom is five-petaled and red with maroon veins.

Grow hybrid storksbill in a gritty, humus-rich soil that is alkaline and perfectly drained. It is essential to keep its root crown dry in the winter, otherwise root and crown rot will occur. Perfect for rockeries, dry mortar retaining walls and alpine troughs, hybrid storksbill is fairly carefree if given the right growing conditions.
