Family
Liliaceae
Botanical Name
Erythronium revolutum
Plant Common Name
Pink Fawn Lily, Revolute Troutlily, Western Troutlily
General Description
An elegant hardy perennial found in moist woodlands from southern British Columbia to northern California, pink fawn lily is grown for its exquisite spring flowers and its dramatically marked foliage. Nodding from wiry, naked stems above paired basal leaves, the pale- to deep-pink flowers have six backswept segments that give them the appearance of taking flight. The yellow-centered blooms are borne one to three per stem. A starburst of yellow anthers protrudes from the gaping blooms. The broadly lance-shaped, glossy green basal leaves are strikingly marbled with maroon. The leaves go dormant soon after the flowers wither. Plants grow from small, tooth-shaped bulbs. Deep-pink-flowered forms sometimes go under the moniker Johnsonii. One such selection has been named 'Pink Beauty.'
Sometimes tricky or slow to establish, this lovely perennial grows and flowers best in partial shade and well-drained, humus-rich soil that is moist in spring and on the dry side in summer. It fares poorly in wet or arid soil. It will often self-sow where happy. Use it in shaded rock gardens, borders, or naturalistic plantings.
