Myrtaceae
EUCALYPTUS gunnii
Cidergum
Native to the relatively chilly climes of Tasmania, this upright, medium-sized tree is valued not only for its handsome evergreen foliage but also for its remarkable cold hardiness. The silvery round foliage of juvenile plants shimmers in the landscape, and works wonderfully in cut flower arrangements. Mature trees bear dark green, lance-shaped leaves. Small white flowers in spring and summer contrast nicely with the leaves. The beautiful smooth bark is gray or chalk-white mottled with orange, pink, and other hues.
This sun-loving plant does best in well drained soil, but is one of the few eucalypts that also succeeds in heavier, damper soils. It makes a splendid lawn specimen or shade tree. It can be planted in windrows to provide shelter and screening.
