EUCALYPTUS leucoxylon ssp. megalocarpa 'Rosea'
Red Flowering Gum
A compact, red-flowered selection of a beautiful Australian tree, 'Rosea' is an excellent choice for smaller yards where winters are mild. From winter into summer it bears shaggy, rosy-red, skirt-shaped flowers in groups of three. They stand out nicely against the glossy dark-green, lance-shaped adult leaves, which droop attractively from the slightly pendulous branches. The cup-shaped green seed capsules are relatively large. This small, typically multi-trunked tree has gray outer bark that sheds to reveal an irregular patchwork of yellow, white, and blue gray. The bark blends beautifully with the tones of the flowers and leaves. Trunks of old specimens often have rough fibrous gray bark near their base. This sun-loving, cold-tender evergreen prefers good drainage, but also does well in many clay soils. Use it where its lovely bark and flowers can be appreciated relatively close at hand. It makes an ideal lawn tree.
