EUCOMIS 'Tugela Ruby'

Family

Liliaceae

Botanical Name

EUCOMIS 'Tugela Ruby'

Plant Common Name

Hybrid Pineapple Lily, Tugela Ruby Pineapple Lily

General Description

The bold purple-flushed leaves and showy flower spikes of this pineapple lily provide a summer-long show. Raised by New Zealand plantsman Eddie Welsh, it is probably a selection or hybrid of Eucomis comosa, a bulbous perennial from eastern South Africa.

Emerging in spring from a large egg-shaped bulb, the upright, broadly strap-shaped leaves form a handsome rosette. Heavily purple-stained when new, the leaves gradually fade to mid green before dying back in fall. Tall cylindrical spikes of star-shaped pinkish-cream flowers are borne on stout fleshy purple-tinged stalks in summer. A frilly crest of leaf-like bracts overtops the flowers (giving rise to the common name "pineapple lily").

Surprisingly hardy given its African origin, this bulb does best in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. It requires ample summer moisture, and dryish conditions during its winter dormant period. Plant bulbs in spring after danger of frost at a depth of two to three times their width. Where marginally hardy, apply a coarse airy winter mulch. This cultivar's striking foliage and flowers suit it for use in containers, mixed borders, and cutting gardens.
