EUONYMUS japonicus 'Silver King'
Japanese Euonymus, Silver King Japanese Spindletree
The large to medium-sized Japanese spindletree ‘Silver King’ is an exceptional variegated form. The eye-catching upright, bushy, evergreen shrub is also tough and can withstand heat and short bouts of drought. The elliptical leaves are glossy and very dark green with broad irregular edges of ivory and pale yellow. They densely clothe the branches and will add bright color to any winter landscape. Small yellow vinegar-scented flowers appear in late spring and early summer. Like most Japanese spindletree cultivars, 'Silver King' rarely if ever fruits.
Japanese spindletree tolerates a wide range of growing sites and treatment, including clay and acid soils as well as full sun to full shade and salt spray. It is amenable to heavy pruning and can be easily shaped for hedges and foundation plantings, but it does not grow quickly. In fact, 'Silver King' can take up to twenty years to reach mature height. Plant it in small gardens as a feature shrub, in hedges or foundation plantings. Japanese spindletree is also grows well in coastal landscapes.
