General Description
Glossy green foliage is a handsome backdrop to both the evergreen spindletree's clusters of yellow green flowers and the light orange-yellow fruits that follow. This variable large shrub to small tree is a broadleaf evergreen native to the woodlands of western China. Its smooth, dark gray to dark gray-brown bark is contrasted by its young branch twigs which are green. It forms a rounded but upright shape.
The folages is a rich glossy green and are pleasant tapering ovals. In late spring to summer, the tiny yellow-green flowers appear on brach tips in clusters and collectively add interest. The rounded fruits that follow are a light orange-yellow, ripening darker just before they split open to reveal the chocolate brown seeds that are orange covered (arils). Although evergreen, the coolness of fall and winter will blush oldest, soon-to-be-shed leaves to a light yellow and orange, accentuating the fruits.
Grow evergreen spindletree in any fertile, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. It may be trimmed at anytime, ideally in late autumn, to a desired shape if used as a hedge, screen or foundation plant. It also looks great as an anchoring shrub at the base of woodland trees in a park or mixed border setting. It is susceptible to euonymus scale and potentially may become a nuisance if seeds are scattered by birds and they germinate.
